First UK haulier awarded AEO status

The first UK container haulier has been awarded Authorised Economic Operator accreditation.

Youngs Container Haulage (YCT) achieved certification after going through what MD Rob Hollyman described as an “extremely thorough and very testing process”.

While some UK freight firms with haulage arms, such as Wincanton and Davies Turner, have been awarded AEO certification, YCT is the first pure container road transport business to be accredited.

Hollyman added that he hoped the award would attract more business to the company, which runs 74 container trucks.

“I’m hoping that by being the final part of the supply chain, delivering the container to the end customer, having the AEO certificate will make us more attractive to shipping lines and forwarders who are themselves AEO-certified.

“If they are using another haulier then they will have to go through all the rigmarole of validating them.”

However, he added that continuing pressure on haulage rates was making this advantage difficult to press through.

“Prospective customers haven’t yet come on board, simply because container haulage supply still outstrips demand, which makes for a very competitive marketplace.

“Business is busy, but the rates simply aren’t high enough at the moment,” he said.
